Basic Home Made Bread

Ingredients

  • 1 package active yeast
  • 2 1/4 cups warm water
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons canola oil
  • 6 1/4-3/4 cups flour

Method

Step 1

In a large bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water for about 10 minutes.

Step 2

Add the sugar, salt, oil, and 5 1/4 cups of flour, reserving the last ~cup.

Step 3

Stir with a spatula until mostly mixed.

Step 4

Pour the last cup of flour onto a clean surface, then empty the mixture on top of the flour and knead until all of the flour on the counter is thoroughly incorporated into the dough and the dough forms a soft, elastic ball of dough, about 8-10 minutes.

Step 5

Place in a greased bowl, turning once to grease the top. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 1 1/2 hours.

Step 6

Punch dough down. cut into two equal pieces and shape into a loaf. Place into two greased 9x5 bread loaf pans, or place each ball onto a piece of parchment paper (this is what I do) to bake on a pizza stone. Cover and let rise another 30 minutes.

Step 7

Bake at 375 degrees for 30-35 minutes or until golden brown and bread sounds hollow when tapped. (note: to help brown the top, I always spray the top of the bread about 10 minutes into baking.) Remove loaves from pans to wire racks to cool.
